On a lush May morning in Maywood Environmental Park, I’d set out hoping for dreamy light — sun burning through fog, wildflowers in the foreground, maybe the little footbridge glowing in romance. But the wild had other plans. As I descended a trail, this spring buck stood watching me, spots still on his coat and only the smallest antler nubs rising above his ears. He positioned himself behind a fallen log and a spray of purple blooms as if he were offering me a ready-made composition. Encounters like this — unplanned, unearned, and unforgettable — are why I return to the wild, and why I hope this portrait brings you back into that moment with me.
